1932 Laundry Shirt Card Paper Dolls
Art by Mary Adele Ziegler
These extremely hard to find paper dolls are from my Mom, Helen Johnson's, collection. They were premiums for the little girls at home, as they were used to make a neat presentation of freshly laundered and ironed men's shirts. Dry cleaners and laundries could have their own names printed on the cards for advertising...and one of these 4 cards did have a name..."BAXTER'S CAREFUL LAUNDERERS AND CLEANERS." No location given. The other 3 cards had only the name of the publisher LONDY Cut-Outs and the artist, Mary Adele Zeigler.
These four are:
MOTHER of the LONDY Family, Series #51
BETTY MARIE Series 5f
LITTLE BROTHER, Series 5h
BIG SISTER, Series 5j
There were other playcards with put-together paper toys such as an automobile, a train, and toy furniture, as well as a few other paper dolls including Betty Marie's little Sister. We'd love to find some of those!
Ours are carefully cleaned up (the old cardstock was of low grade and quite dark and spotty) and rearranged a little to fit the 8.5" x 11" format. The originals were rather tall and narrow..about 13.5" tall. And I've added a little more coloring than the originals, but not enough to change the character of them. I made the eyes blue-grey, the hair on Big Sister blonde, and made the pink brocade dress a wee bit pinker. They may well have had these clearer colors which were very dulled down by age.
This set has 4 archival pages all on 80# cardstock, fine-grained, nice-to-cut,and stored in a crystal clear seal-top bag.
