GEORGE and MARTHA WASHINGTON
Hand-Made Dolls circa 1920s-30s
They may not be George and Martha, but they have that period style, so that's what I've always called them.
I was given these interesting dolls many years ago, and really know little about them. They are obviously hand-made. They have stiff wire armatures. The lady doll has a cone-shaped base covered with a silky jersey with soft stuffing inside. She carries a tiny silk purse and hold pink silk satin roses. Roses also adorn her ruff, and her netted headpiece. She has a gold cord necklace.
Her pale blue dress, I'm quite sure, is silk satin, as it's so fine. His suit is finely woven wool. His 5 fingered hands are covered in fine lace wrapping. They both have quite old looking lace trims. Their hair is carefully formed and designed white mohair, and their fine jersey "skin" faces have embroidered features.
With lots of research, I have not found any dolls that look exactly like these. Maybe one-of-a-kind. Just don't know. Others in the time period with a similar look run up into the hundreds of dollars. One pair on ebay called George and Martha are similarly made with fine silk satin and white mohair wigs and drawn-on faces. However there is a label saying F. Heinold Dolls, George & Martha Washington Clinton Mass. Their price is $99 for the pair
She is 12.5" tall, with a 3.5" base
He is 13" tall with no base.
