Mid-20th Century Hand-made Doll
This doll is from my own collection; made in a special technique called Kimekomi which means tucked into a groove. I have included with my photos, an image of a wooden base for a classically made Kimekomi doll. You can see the grooves into which the padded fabrics are tucked.
Here's a description I got from Alyx Mazerov, who makes dolls in this fashion, on Etsy:
"Kimekomi is a technique where a pattern is drawn and then cut onto a surface, such as a smooth foam. Fabric is then placed over the pattern and tucked into the cuts.
Kimekomi was developed in the 18th century in Japan as a doll making technique. Kimekomi literally means "to tuck into a groove".
This little guy is a finely modeled Japanese Kimekomi doll represents a young dancer dressed in rich silk brocaded Kimono jacket. He is balanced in a dance pose with one foot lifted. He's holding a bell at the end of a silk braided rope. His hair is made of fine silk floss. The only flaw is a tiny mark on his cheek, which you can see in the photos.
Online prices for mid century dolls somewhat in this style (not greatly complex) are $160-$260. I am pricing this one much, much lower, to make room for more dolls from my mom's collection.
