"VITROLITE" KITCHEN of 1926
Re-Designed by Judy M Johnson
This Kitchen Plan is from a 1926 "American Builder" Annual Plan Book. It has been enhanced with paste-ons by Judy M Johnson using dozens of clips and cuts from various 1920s sources. Judy has chosen the classic blue and white "Delft" Dutch tiles and color scheme to decorate this room which was just black and white to start.
Though it's called "Vitrolite" and that company designed the plan, there's not a lick of the product shown. I don't even know what it is for sure...but some kind of surfacing product. Indicated on the original plan is a work table near the center of the kitchen which said in their descriptions, that it was covered with the product, as were the counters on either side of the sink.
It was there in black and white in that old book I got from my folks...just begging to be decorated. It only took about 6 hours to find all the components then to cut and arrange them to create the finished product. it's recommended that you glue the walls and floor to cardboard such as artists matboard, then join them with fabric backed "book" tape. I have divided the design onto two 8.5" x 11" CARDSTOCK pages. It's much less costly to mail than a large flat 11" x 17" size. (The two pages add up to 11 x 17 if you put them side by side.)
If you make a three sided "box" for two of the walls and the floor, then do it again with nothing on the floor, but the other two walls pasted on, you can slide the pair of three-sectioned rooms together to make a full four sided 3-d room. You may have dollhouse furniture to use inside. Or if you are clever, make some paper furniture to stand up in the pretty set-up scene.
If you are more 2-d thinking, the walls can be pasted into a scrapbook, as backgrounds for paper doll play...and even for adding other decorative components such as curtains, flowers, dishes and such.
However you enjoy it, I'm glad you like it too, as much as I do...as it was lots of fun to make!
Two 8.5" x 11" pages on 80# archival cardstock, and stored in a crystal clear seal-top bag.
