A Brigitte Deval Doll Painted by Judy M Johnson
For DOLLS Magazine
NOW, on CARDSTOCK!
Back in the summer of 1988 I was at the 25th anniversary of The Enchanted Dollhouse in Vermont, with Jim Lillemoe, for B. Shackman Co. I had painted Enchanted Dollhouse's commemorative paper doll for the occasion. There, were doll makers, toy makers and magazine publishers. And I got to chatting with the lead editor of DOLLS magazine, and I (always pushing paper dolls) asked if they'd ever considered putting paper dolls in their magazine. She replied that she loved them herself, and thought it was a good idea, and that the PDs should be of dolls. She asked "What doll would you like to do?" I immediately said Brigitte Deval, the Bavarian doll maker, who made simply GORGEOUS porcelain dolls overlaid with wax. Good idea, now, how to pull it off? Brigitte was not at that Vermont event.
Following spring- Toledo doll show - I talked with Brigitte herself, (her English was minimal then) and her agent, and we arranged a deal. Phoned Collector Communications (Dolls Mag) and finalized the deal there. We were off. Brigitte let me photograph her dolls and clothes. Soon a paper doll was ready. I mailed (no email then) photos of the art to Brigitte in Northern Italy, and she phoned me with joy at the result.
This is how my paper doll of this gorgeous doll became DOLLS MAGAZINE's Premiere paper doll in 1989. The green silk dress & slip are from photos of clothes designed & sewn by Brigitte. The other two gowns are from paintings of the Rococco period. The background is similar to paintings of that period as well.
